This shows the aptness of the animal form for Animagi (and other) characters based on animal symbolism. Warning: May contain spoilers.

Animal symbolism is simply what that animal represents, whether for use as an icon or flag animal or artistic uses. There are general recognized forms, which are described within that animal. So here is a list of the animal, the Harry Potter character and what the animal signifies .

DOG (Sirius Black)
The dog is 'The Guardian'. The dog, also, as we know, symbolizes protection, loyalty, devotion and trust. This is based on the character of the dog itself. Sirius, to me, has more dog-like attributes even than these symbolic ones ... if you throw a stick to a dog, he'll leap after it. Sirius also is very spontaneous and will act before thinking (which gets him into a lot of trouble!)

CAT (Minerva McGonagall)
Independence, protection, magic, balance, wisdom, self-assurance and searching. In Heraldry, the cat represents courage (which is suitable for the head of Gryffindor!)

WOLF (Remus Lupin)
The wolf is 'The Teacher'. It's representational for family/social values, intelligence, outwitting enemies, taking advantage of change, a pathfinder, study, protection and success.

RAT (Peter Pettigrew)
The rat stands for many different things, depending on the culture. Generally, however, it stands for filth, deceit and betrayal (to 'rat' on someone).

SNAKE (Voldemort)
The snake is used numerous times throughout the books, but I just wanted to show the correctness in the use for Lord Voldemort. The snake is 'The Destroyer'. Snakes also signify transmutation, immortality, rebirth and transformation

STAG (James Potter)
The stag represents pride, boldness, purity, independence and bravery

OTHERS

OWLS
Owls are suitable for wizard messengers not only because they're really great birds but also because they signify wit, magic, truth and, well, just about anything magical! They are the most magical of all birds because of their mysterious nature. Witches used to be accused of being able to transform into owls and, in fact the Latin name of the owl mostly begins with "strix", which means "witch" as well.

PHOENIX
Doesn't actually symbolize immortality! Most people think it does. It actually represents rebirth and resurrection, purity and light.

HERALDRY
In heraldry, the animals represent whom the coat of arms belongs to. As we know for the houses, the lion represents courage, the snake cunning and the eagle those of wit. I'm not too sure of the heraldic badger but a badger does indeed symbolize tenacity, as we would expect from a Hufflepuff!

The sword of Godric Gryffindor, founder of Hogwarts School
