Sirius Black : Padfoot

Sirius Black was best friend and best man of James Potter. At school, they, along with Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew formed the Marauders. At 16, Sirius left his parents home, and went and lived with James and his parents. With an inheritance from his Uncle Alphard, he got his own home at 17. Later on, he was best man at James and Lily's wedding, then after the birth of Harry, Sirius was made his God-father.

Sirius was an active member of the Order of the Phoenix, during the first war against Voldemort with his friends, the Potters, Lupin and Pettigrew. When news got out that Voldemort was after the Potters, he was to become their Secret- keeper, but decided at the last minute to use Pettigrew instead. When Sirius had found out that the Potters had been attacked, he made his way to Godrics Hollow, where he lent Hagrid his motor bike, then went and located Pettigrew. On confronting him, Pettigrew, in return, blew up most of the street after yelling that Sirius killed the Potters. Sirius was framed for the deaths, and as Dumbledore confirmed that yes, Sirius was indeed the Potters Secret Keeper, he was sent to Azkaban Prison, with no trial.

Twelve years later he saw a picture of Pettigrew as a rat, in a newspaper, Fudge had given him. After reading the article, and seeing that Pettigrew was returning to Hogwarts where Harry was, he escaped Azkaban by turning into a dog, and slipping past the dementors.

When he arrived at Hogwarts (after stopping by at Magnolia Crescent first to get a look at Harry), he broke into the school twice, one night he slashed the Fat Lady's portrait, as she wouldn't let him in, the second night, thanks to Crookshanks getting him the passwords, Ron woke up to find him hanging over his bed with a knife in his hand, the bed hangings slashed.

Only did the truth come out, when he took Ron (and Scabbers) to the Shrieking Shack, where not only did Harry and Hermione follow, but also Lupin and Snape. The truth was told, Scabbers was turned back into Pettigrew, and everyone began to think of tomorrow. Unfortunately, Lupin turned into a werewolf, when bathed in the moonlight, Pettigrew escaped, and Sirius was locked up in the tower, awaiting the dementors. With the help of Hermione's time turner, he managed to escape on the back of Buckbeak, his innocence still unproven.

In GoF, after he had heard of Harry's scar hurting, and strange happenings, he returned to Britain, and made his way to Hogwarts under the guise of a dog. Through out the tasks, he offered Harry support and advice, and was by his side after the third trial, even accompanying him to the hospital wing. He was then sent by Dumbledore to gather Lupin and the 'old crowd' for the upcoming war with Voldemort.

As Sirius's mother died in 1987, Sirius inherited 12, Grimmauld Place, which he handed over to Dumbledore to use as the secret Headquarters of the Order. With no where else to live, both he and Lupin lived there, but sadly, Sirius could never leave like Lupin, as he was still on the run.

Towards the end of OotP, Sirius was part of the Order who come to save Harry and his friends from the DE's. However, after being hit by a spell from Bellatrix, his cousin, he fell through the archway in the Department of Mysteries. Although, the spell did not kill him, the veil did. We have heard that we will see more of Sirius, but how and when is another matter entirely.
