Ronald Weasley : Running Weasel?

Ronald "Ron" Bilius Weasley (born March 1, 1980) is tall, long-nosed, freckle-faced, red-haired and hot-tempered. He is Harry Potter's best friend. Ron is a fiercely loyal friend and supporter, as illustrated by his relentless support of the ailing Chudley Cannons Quidditch team. The sixth of seven children in a financially-struggling family, Ron has insecurities that run deep. He has been typecast as the famous Harry Potter's "sidekick", and feels he will never outshine his brothers, yet is expected to do just as well. These insecurities sometimes rear their ugly faces, such as when Harry was selected to compete in the Triwizard Tournament, or when he found out that the money he'd paid Harry back with was disappearing Leprechaun's gold. Then Ron has a tendency to lose his temper, and can be brutally stubborn about apologies.

But out of these insecurities rises a proud boy with strong convictions and emotions. He is an excellent chess player, and recently proved himself a worthy Quidditch Keeper and somewhat reluctant prefect. Ron seems to be developing some deeper feelings for Hermione Granger, but is having difficulty dealing with them. :)

Ron has stood by Harry Potter's side throughout the struggle against Voldemort, fighting bravely at the Ministry of Magic against hordes of Deatheaters. He fell victim to a strange tank of floating brains, and was temporarily quite disabled because of it, but has recovered. I have no doubt that he will continue to fight for the side of good, and find his own way to achieve the recognition he yearns for.

Rupert Grint as Ronald Weasley

Rupert Grint takes on the role of Ronald Weasley in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

NAME: Ronald Bilius Weasley a.k.a. Ron Weasley

BIRTHDAY: March 1, 1980

AGE: a year older than Harry

Hair Color: Red

Eyes: unknown

House: Gryffindor

Blood Purity: Pure-Blood

PARENTS: Arthur and Molly Weasley

SIBLINGS: Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George and Ginny

PETS: Previously Scabbers, presently Pigwidgeon

POSITION: Harry Potter's best friend, Gryffindor Prefect, Keeper Gryffindor Quidditch Team.

QUOTES:

'One person can't feel all that at once, they'd explode.'

His two best friends at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are Hermione Granger and Harry Potter. He is called Ron instead of Ronald by everyone except Luna Lovegood, who calls him "Ronald". Ron is the son of Arthur and Molly Weasley, and brother of Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George and Ginny.

Arthur Weasley is the head of the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office at the Ministry of Magic, but doesn't earn much. The Weasleys are the poorest among the pureblood wizards in the hidden Wizarding World. All of the Weasley children have to make do with hand-me-down items and second hand goods. Ron is sadly no exception. Being poor is something he is very sensitive about. He is also much taunted as to his family's poverty by Draco Malfoy - who happens to be the son of the richest pure-blood wizard and Voldemort's faithful servant - Lucius Malfoy. Though Harry and Hermione are always by his side supporting him. Ron - though he may be poor, and his family might have enough financial troubles - is proud at heart. During the Quidditch World Cup in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Ron wants to buy Omniaculars, but they were extremely costly. Harry buys them for him, but Ron accepts them only on the condition that Harry would not give Ron any Christmas presents for an 10 years.

Ronald and Harry first meet while Harry is searching for Platform 9 3/4. Being in the muggle world for eleven years, Harry has difficulty in finding Platform 9 3/4 from where he has to get the school train - Hogwarts Express to take him to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry and Ron share a compartment on the Hogwarts Express, where Ron shows Harry his pet rat Scabbers and Harry shares some sweets with Ron.

Ron's favorite sport, apart from Quidditch is Wizard's Chess and he teaches Harry how to play. It is this ability of Ron which wins Gryffindor House 50 points during their first year, as Ron helps Harry to save the Sorcerer's Stone from falling into the wrong hands and the trio have to pass a Chess Game setup by Professor McGonagall. Ron suffers from arachnophobia from when his brother Fred turned his teddy bear into a spider when he was little (There is a little discrepancy as to this, since Fred is only a year older than Ron and he wouldnt be allowed to use Magic outside of school - so how did he manage to perform magic without getting caught?). Ronald also shares his dormitory at Hogwarts with Harry Potter, Neville Longbottom, Seamus Finnigan and Dean Thomas.

Ron in the books

In Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Ron and Harry meet for the first time during their train journey to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Ron and Harry become inseparable from that very first journey itself, and meet their friend Hermione Granger also. Ron shows a dislike for Hermione's know-i-all attitude and bossy ways, which she overhears and locks herself in the girl's bathroom to cry. At that instant news comes via Professor Quirrel that a Troll has entered the school and the students are asked to leave. Ron and Harry show marvellous bravery and go to find Hermione. Battling and defeating the Troll they together earn 10 points for Gryffindor. Also in this book, Ron plays a major part in the anti-climax. It is his skills at Wizard Chess which come in handy, when the trio are hell-bent on saving the Sorcerer's Stone from falling into the wrong hands. His marvellous chess play, where he sacrifices himself so that Harry can take the White King and proceed, earns Gryffindor fifty points.

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Ron's wand is broken when he crashes a Ford Anglia which Mr. Weasley had charmed to fly, into the Whomping Willow. The wand later backfires at crucial moments: first when Ron tries to curse Draco Malfoy for calling Hermione a mudblood, and later when Professor Lockhart tries to use it to modify Ron's and Harry's memories. Ron also faces his fear of spiders when he and Harry encounter a colony of acromantulas in the Forbidden Forest. Ron and Harry were sent to "follow the spiders" by Hagrid if they wanted to know more about the Chamber of Secrets. Ron was so terrified by his encounter with Aragog the acromantula that he became mad at Hagrid for sending them into the forest. Ron also accompanies Harry and Lockhart into the Chamber of Secrets knowing full well that they might come face to face with a Basilisk there.

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Ron does not play any major role except providing some comic relief. All through the book Ron and Hermione fight over their pets, but it is later revealed that Ron's pet rat Scabbers is an animagus (a wizard who can turn himself into an animal at will) by the name of  Peter Pettigrew. It was believed that Sirius Black was Voldemort's servant and that he had betrayed the Potters to the Dark Lord. Also it was believed by all that Peter Pettigrew had been murdered by Sirius Black so ruthlessly that all that was ever found of Peter was a finger. Ron is saddened by the loss of his pet but Sirius sends him an owl as compensation, which his sister Ginny names Pigwidgeon, much to Ron's dismay.

For the first time in the series Ron and Harry have a monumental fight in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Ron gets a taste of fame after the second task in which he took part because of being Harry's most prized possession. During GoF, Harry and Ron's friendship is tested. Though Hermione tries her level best to reconcile the friends, she remains largely unsuccessful. Ron believes that Harry had submitted his name to the Goblet of Fire so that he could take part in the TriWizard Tournament, but he learns of the dangers Harry faces when he sees Harry battling a Hungarian Horntail with much danger to his life. Their friendship is strengthened more.

Ron becomes keeper of the Gryffindor quidditch team in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix; though not initially successful, he later overcomes his fears when performing in front of others. Also Ron helps Harry and the others in the Ministry of Magic to fight the DeathEaters and gets hurt by memories and brains in the process.

Ron's Love Life : Is it?

A lively debate now runs amongst Harry Potter fans regarding the ships which are canon and ships which are purely fanfic based. To the uninitiated muggle, ships is a shorter form of "relationships". Many fans are of the opinion that Ron's jealousy over  Hermione is a proof that she is his romantic interest. Whether she returns these feelings is debated, but most of the evidence suggests that she does: she has shown jealousy over Ron's interest in Fleur Delacour and seems quite happy to argue with him constantly throughout the books despite their strong friendship, which is seen by many fans as unresolved sexual tension. With the Jo having referred to "tension" and "something going on" between those two in the not-so-distant past and the numbers supporting this pairing among the general public far outweighing any other, though, it is not so much any obstacles directly provided by Rowling that balance out the evidence for this pairing and create conflict as the insistence of the Harry/Hermione crowd that said evidence is invalid altogether.
