Cho Chang is an "extremely pretty" Ravenclaw girl a year ahead of Harry Potter. Her name seems to imply Eastern Asian descent, possibly Chinese. She is the seeker on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team, and is the first girl Harry gets a crush on. During Harry's fourth year, he had a crush on Cho and asked her to the Yule Ball. Unfortunately Cedric Diggory, Hufflepuff's Seeker, asked her first, and she dated Cedric until he was murdered by Peter Pettigrew on Lord Voldemort's orders.

At that precise moment the door of their compartment slid open.

'Oh… hello, Harry,' said a nervous voice. 'Urn… bad time?'

Harry wiped the lenses of his glasses with his Trevor-free hand. A very pretty girl with long, shiny black hair was standing in the doorway smiling at him: Cho Chang, the Seeker on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team.

'Oh… hi,' said Harry blankly.

'Urn…" said Cho. 'Well… just thought I'd say hello… bye then.'

Rather pink in the face, she closed the door and departed. Harry slumped back in his seat and groaned. He would have liked Cho to discover him sitting with a group of very cool people laughing their heads off at a joke he had just told; he would not have chosen to be sitting with Neville and Loony Lovegood, clutching a toad and dripping in Stinksap.

Unfortunately for Harry, Cho's heart was already pursued and won by handsome, Hufflepuff prefect and champion Cedric Diggory, with whom she attended the Yule Ball. When Cedric was killed by Voldemort during the Triwizard Tournament, Cho was flung into mourning.

During Harry's fifth year, Hermione Granger says that, due to Cedric's death, Cho frequently cries. Cho and her friend, Marietta Edgecombe, join Dumbledore's Army, even though both their parents said to stay on Dolores Umbridge's good side. Cho joined because Harry was teaching and because of what happened to Cedric. Harry and Cho share a kiss under some mistletoe, and on Valentine's Day went on a date of sorts in the wizard's village of Hogsmeade, but Cho's continued grief over the death of Diggory, her jealousy of Harry's friendship with Hermione, and his seeming inexperience in matters of the heart soured the experience.

Oddly enough, instead of resenting or blaming Harry for Cedric's untimely demise, she began to cling to Harry. She supported his D.A. efforts, and they went out a couple of times; it was she who gave Harry his first kiss.

They looked at each other for a long moment. Harry felt a burning desire to run from the room and, at the same time, a complete inability to move his feet.

'Mistletoe,' said Cho quietly, pointing at the ceiling over his head.

'Yeah,' said Harry. His mouth was very dry. 'It's probably full of Nargles, though.'

'What are Nargles?'

'No idea,' said Harry. She had moved closer. His brain seemed to have been Stunned. 'You'd have to ask Loony. Luna, I mean.'

Cho made a funny noise halfway between a sob and a laugh. She was even nearer to him now. He could have counted the freckles on her nose.

'I really like you, Harry.'

He could not think. A tingling sensation was spreading through him, paralysing his arms, legs and brain.
She was much too close. He could see every tear clinging to her eyelashes…
 

Cho is sadly still extremely upset and confused about Cedric, and she began asking Harry about Cedic's death and suffering frequent emotional and jealous outbursts. This wasn't what Harry had in mind. Despite attempts by Hermione to smooth things over and 'translate' for Harry, he and Cho's barely-formed relationship dissolved. When Marietta Edgecombe betrays Dumbledore's Army, she is afflicted by the hex Hermione placed on the parchment each member of Dumbledore's Army signed, leaving the word "sneak" on her forehead. When Harry blames Marietta, Cho defends her, irate at what she considers Hermione's dirty trick; this cools Harry and Cho's relationship considerably.

After the death of Sirius Black, Harry comments that his feelings for Cho have abated, perhaps because of his changed worldview. At the end of Harry's fifth year, Ginny Weasley reveals that Cho is dating Ginny's ex-boyfriend, Michael Corner. Which Harry didn't like very much.

Half-Blood Prince and Beyond - A look into the Crystal Ball:

While not on exactly friendly terms by the end of the 5th book, some of the animosity between them seems to be shrinking due to the larger, looming threat of Voldemort's return. There may be a future for them, but it seems obvious that both Harry and Cho have some serious emotional issues to sort out independently from one another first. Though Jo Rowling  has already made it clear that Cho and Harry will not be getting together again, the chapter of their relationship has closed - once and for all.
